DB Schenker to test 150 Volta Zero electric trucks

DB Schenker, one of Europe's leading logistics and transportation companies, has announced that it will test 150 Volta Zero trucks, the world's first purpose-built electric trucks, in its operations across the continent. The pilot test, which will start later this year, is part of DB Schenker's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and offering green logistics solutions to its customers.

The Volta Zero is a 16-tonne electric truck designed specifically for urban deliveries. It features a unique cab design that places the driver in the vehicle's center, providing a 220-degree range of visibility and minimizing blind spots. The cab also has sliding doors and a low step for easy entry and exit, as well as a spacious and comfortable interior with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a matching infotainment touchscreen.

The Volta Zero is powered by a Proterra battery pack that offers a range of 150 to 200 kilometers (95 to 125 miles), more than enough for most inner-city logistics and distribution vehicles. The battery pack is located between the chassis rails, which is the safest possible location. The truck also uses a compact electric motor, transmission, and axle unit supplied by Meritor, which provides enhanced efficiency and delivers 149 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

The Volta Zero is not only eco-friendly but also versatile and capable. It can accommodate up to seven pallets or 16 Euro pallets in its cargo space, which has a volume of 37.7 cubic meters (1,331 cubic feet). It can also support different body types, such as ambient or refrigerated storage for temperature-sensitive cargo. Moreover, it can leverage bi-directional charging capability to power other devices or vehicles using its battery.

DB Schenker is one of the first customers of Volta Trucks and has visited the manufacturer's facility in Steyr, Austria, to participate in developing the prototype. Cyrille Bonjean, head of land transport at DB Schenker Europe, said: "The upcoming European pilot test of Volta Zero Trucks is an important milestone for Volta Trucks and for us. As a market leader, we strive to be the world's leading supplier of green logistics and have a strong focus on reducing emissions from our vehicle fleet. The feedback from our drivers and transporters during the pilot tests will be valuable when it comes time to start series production of the truck."

DB Schenker plans to test the Volta Zero trucks at its European terminals to transport goods from distribution hubs to city centers and urban areas. This is where the truck's innovative design comes into its own, as it can navigate narrow streets and congested traffic with ease and safety. DB Schenker aims to offer emission-free deliveries in 124 cities and 22 countries with its 330 electric trucks and 70 electric cargo bikes – the forwarding market's largest fleet of electrified vehicles.

The Volta Zero is more than just an electric truck. It is a revolution in commercial vehicle operations and a next-generation driving experience. It is also a statement of DB Schenker's vision and ambition to become a global leader in sustainable logistics. By testing 150 Volta Zero trucks in Europe, DB Schenker hopes to make city centers safer and more sustainable for all. @via Volta Trucks.
