Hyundai Kona Electric: A Smart Choice for Eco-Friendly Drivers

Hyundai Kona Electric: A Smart Choice for Eco-Friendly Drivers

If you want a practical, affordable, and fun-to-drive electric vehicle, check out the Hyundai Kona Electric. This compact SUV offers impressive performance, range, and features that make it stand out from the competition. In this article, we will compare the Hyundai Kona Electric with some of its rivals and show why it is a smart choice for eco-friendly drivers.

Performance and Range

The Hyundai Kona Electric comes with two battery options: a 39.2 kWh battery that delivers 136 PS (100 kW) of power and 305 km (189 miles) of range or a 64 kWh battery that boosts the power to 204 PS (150 kW) and the range to 484 km (300 miles). Both versions have a torque of 395 Nm (291 lb-ft), which means they can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 7.9 seconds. The top speed is limited to 167 km/h (104 mph).

The Hyundai Kona Electric also features adjustable regenerative braking, which allows you to recover energy when slowing down or coasting. You can choose from four levels of regenerative braking using the paddle shifters behind the steering wheel or let the smart regenerative braking system automatically adjust the level based on traffic and road conditions.

The Hyundai Kona Electric has a longer range than many of its competitors, such as the Nissan Leaf Plus (363 km or 226 miles), the Chevrolet Bolt EV (417 km or 259 miles), and the Kia Niro EV (385 km or 239 miles). The only electric vehicle that beats the Hyundai Kona Electric in terms of range is the Tesla Model 3, which can go up to 568 km (353 miles) on a single charge. However, the Tesla Model 3 is also more expensive than the Hyundai Kona Electric, starting at $39,990 for the Standard Range Plus version.

Charging and Convenience

The Hyundai Kona Electric can be charged using various types of chargers, depending on your needs and availability. At home, you can use a standard 120V outlet or a 240V Level 2 charger, which can fully charge the battery in about nine hours for the 39.2 kWh version and about ten hours for the 64 kWh version. On the road, you can use a public Level 2 charger or a DC fast charger, which can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in about 48 minutes for the 39.2 kWh version and about 64 minutes for the 64 kWh version.

The Hyundai Kona Electric also comes with a smart charging system that allows you to schedule your charging times and take advantage of off-peak electricity rates. You can also monitor and control your charging status and settings using the Bluelink app on your smartphone or smartwatch.

To make your driving experience more convenient and comfortable, the Hyundai Kona Electric offers a range of features, such as:

  • A 10.25-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility
  • A head-up display that projects key information on the windshield
  • A wireless charging pad for your smartphone
  • A Krell premium sound system with eight speakers and a subwoofer
  • A smart key with push-button start and remote climate control
  • A heated steering wheel and heated front seats
  • A power sunroof that lets in natural light and fresh air

Design and Safety

The Hyundai Kona Electric has a distinctive design that sets it apart from other electric vehicles. It has a sleek and aerodynamic shape, with LED headlights and taillights, a closed grille, and unique alloy wheels. It also has a spacious and stylish interior with high-quality materials, ambient lighting, and plenty of storage space. The Hyundai Kona Electric offers five color options for the exterior and two color options for the interior.

The Hyundai Kona Electric also provides high safety for you and your passengers. It comes with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems, such as:

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Following Assist
  • Blind-Spot Collision Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning
  • Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go
  • Driver Attention Warning and High Beam Assist
  • Rear Parking Distance Warning and Rear View Monitor

In addition, the Hyundai Kona Electric has a strong body structure that protects you from impacts, as well as six airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, tire pressure monitoring system, and more.

Price and Warranty

The Hyundai Kona Electric is one of the most affordable electric vehicles on the market, especially considering its performance, range, and features. The price of the Hyundai Kona Electric starts at $34,000 for the base SE trim and goes up to $42,500 for the top Limited trim. The Hyundai Kona Electric also qualifies for a federal tax credit of up to $7,500 and state and local incentives, depending on your location.

The Hyundai Kona Electric also comes with a generous warranty that covers the vehicle for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. The powertrain is covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles, and the battery is covered for 10 years or unlimited miles. The Hyundai Kona Electric also includes 24/7 roadside assistance for 5 years and complimentary maintenance for 3 years or 36,000 miles.
